There is a play that I enjoy, and has been made into a movie, called 'Arsenic and Old Lace.' It is about two old ladies who take it upon themselves to help those less fortunate along to the next life. They make their own Elderberry wine and serve it to the gentlemen callers. Much hilarity ensues.

Well, in real life, elderberries can be delicious, and potentially dangerous. The blue berries that form in starburst clusters are full of seed that have arsenic in them. If you do not clean the seeds from the berries, there is a potential for the arsenic to leach out and into the jam or whatever you are making.

Unless you know what you are doing, do not eat Elderberries, and DO NOT eat them raw. They need a bit of sugar in any case.
