If you are in a Coniferous forest, a pine tree forest, look for pine cones. Not only do the ones several years old and dry on the ground make good fuel for the fire, the younger ones have 'pine nuts' in them. Yes, pine trees have seeds. open pine cone

This one is open, so it would not have the pine nuts in it. If you find a cone that is slightly green or is dry but closed, you can make them open by heating. I prefer to use something that I do not have to clean as there is pine sap in the cone, just enough to smell good, and make a pan sticky. If you use a rock beside the fire, be careful that the cone does not roll in, or that the cone does not pop the pine nut into the coals.

Evergreens can be used for bedding and shelter, too.

You can make Pinecone Firestarters.
