Strawberries in the wild will hide amongst other plants.

Notice the shape of the leaves in the foreground as these are strawberries that have gotten tall to seek the sun. Strawberries like full sun and will be a nice groundcover in meadows and such. If there are trees or underbrush, the leaves may get big and the stems lanky.

You may need to search under the leaves.

Check to see if the berries are good or bad. If they are bad, pick them and leave them under the strawberry leaves. That way you will not try to pick them later. Notice the brown berry on the right: It molded and dried on the stem before it could be picked.
When the strawberries are new, in the spring, it is easier to find them, but mid summer(June), look for the leaves, flowers and berries.
