Rena at the Helm

I love boats. I love being on the water. I love the spray in my face, the helm under my hand...

Sorry. Too poetic.

road to the dock

It can be difficult to get a boat into the water. There is the steep landing to deal with, and other people.

dockside dockside

Looking out over the grass to the dockside and then past into the boating chanels gives me a little thrill.

I get to steer once in a while. There are actually a few resturants that have docks and are great to visit during a day out on the water.

The engine behind me in the picture is several decades old. It is kept in great condition. One year, right after a deluge that lasted several days, we were out on the water and the flood had torn someone's dock off and it was floating tangled in lake weed. We towed it to shore and went out again, where we helped someone who had engine troubles. Walkabout's engine had no problems what so ever.

That was a busy day, and it was literally hours before a no-wake restriction for the lakes was imposed.

sailboat with large keel

I did not catch the huge crane that placed this and several other sail boats in the water. I had always assumed that they were placed in the water the same as motor boats, with the trailer in the water.

Out on the water, you have nothing to distract you from just existing. There is wind. There is water. There is water in the wind. There is the boat beneath you, the sky above you. And no phones. At least this time.

shoreline

Even though water generally looks the same, (wet) the conditions can change the ripples to waves, the color from steel to glass.

When on the water, it is different for navigation. I usually am on some local lakes, so we do not get too far from land. To help, I try to keep an eye on landmarks to guide us to places around the lake.

Radio towerwater tower

The gentleman who takes me out to the land of water and boats is Willie. Here he is with two of his loves, Big Bird and Walkabout. When he can, he works with Blackbeard's in the Keys.

The person above is the one who is poetic... Read Generations to see why.

Willie saw himself on the site...

Cool pictures! I'm famous!I went out sailboarding today, I
had my new belt harness and it really helped.
I've never had that board going that fast before. I swear I had all but
3 or 4 feet of the board out of the water on plane!
Wooohoooooooooo!

Willie sent me another picture.
